They can cope with some shade. We have one that was here when we moved in. It gets shade for about half the summer day, more in other seasons, and flowers really well.
This one will get sun for a few hours from around the end of April until around the beginning of August. As it's the first year in the ground, l will wait and see what happens in the next few weeks. Unfortunately l have realised it's very close to a broken fence post that needs to be replaced, so the decision might have been made for me ☹. Thanks @Posy
