Total Beginner, are these dead or can they be revived?

Hey all, as the subject eludes, I could write everything I know about gardening on a post it note, and have a few things in my garden that I don’t know what to do with. I’m hoping that some of them can be revived.

The first is an acer for sure which has been in my garden many years but it doesn’t look very happy ATM

The second is a fern which has never died back this amount before so I’m worried it’s a gonna

the third is unidentified but has always been a real goer with yellow leaves and dark berries afterwards, there’s a little new growth but mainly looks dead.

the fourth is a hebe... dead?

any help is massively appreciated

Acer is fine. new leaves starting.
    Fern, probably fine too.
Looks like hypericum. Can be cut back pretty hard to improve shape. Pretty tough, so should be fine too.
    Devon.
  • Yes hypericum rings a bell! Thank you, can I just cut it back any old how?

Ferns in the hills of UK disappear then spring up again to cover whole hillsides in the likes of the lake district. I would expect that you could pull out the brown fronds from last years growth and this year's will come out again.  Indeed you might even find some starting to come out and unfurl once the old growth has been cleared.

Of course the usual disclaimer being I'm no expert and could be wrong. I only describe my experience of ferns in the wild and the gardens I've worked on that had them.
  • Brilliant, I’ve cut the hypericum right back, hopefully it will grow back!

I will get rid of the dead growth on the fern and keep my fingers crossed for him too.

Are we saying the hebe has snuffed it then? The last photo, the brownest of them all!

I cut the old fern leaves right back hard in March ... did mine the other week ... then the new fronds  (called croziers because of their shape like a bishop's crook) will uncurl and replace them.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Yes, I'm afraid the hebe looks dead.
