Plant Id please - is this a weed?

Any idea what this is? Looks like it’s growing from a bulb...?

  • I would say it's a persicaria, a perennial plant. On first viewing it could be mistaken for a dock but the photo of the root fits with persicaria.

Dock.  Quite deep rooted and will come back if you leave bits behind.

  • @rachelQrtJHBjb I didn’t see these flowers last spring or summer (new house) so I’m going to assume it’s dock

If it's a persicaria it is most likely this form and I find they flower freely

Maybe wait and see?  The foliage on dock is bigger and coarser.

Hi @Obelixx and thanks for a useful link. Pity they don't show the botanic names in the list of those common weeds (it only shows when you click for the full plant details).

@squirral87k4-WvGwT Put a little piece of those leaves in mouth and munch. If you can feel a slightly acidic taste, then it's definitely a Rumex.

  • I guess I’ll wait and see! I took one out and left the rest...
