Lavender- half dead, half alive!?

My lavender plant is about 6 years old and currently looks like this. it seems most of it is dead, having grey woody stems throughout, except a small number of green tips on one side. What would you suggest I do with it?

Take cuttings from the green part, then I'm afraid it's the compost bin

Tinder for your next bonfire, use the pot for a new climber to go up that purple trellis
  • Thank you! I have a clematis which can take its place.

6 years old? That's very old for a lavender. ;) It's finished, dead, muerta!

Don't have a bonfire,I get sick of neighbours doing that in the middle of s sunny windy day windows open and washing out. They are very much discouraged now because of air pollution
  • They don’t survive long in pots and I’m pretty sure yours is Lavandula stoechas and therefore not very hardy.

I have a lavender border which has become very leggy.  Contrary to every other comment I have ever seen, I read an article claiming that lavender will grow back even if cut back hard into old wood.  As it was a case of give it a try or rip it all out, I gave it a try.  My experience is that this person was either wrong or very lucky indeed.  My 8 feet of lavender has one twig showing any sign of life!  It's coming out in the next couple of days.
  • Good on you for giving it a chance though! 😁
