Keeping euphorbia alive

Hello all,
I love euphorbia and have often had them in a border which faces west, with hedgerow at the back (eastern flank). There's also an apple tree in that border but I've never put them in the shade of the tree.
I've never had much luck with them and they always seem to ail and die within a few years.
I've just received a whole load of seedlings from a neighbour: in his garden down the road they pop up everywhere.
What am I doing wrong? I'd love some successful euphorbia in that bed but I'm wondering whether it's the position that's not working for them.
All wisdom much appreciated
Kedi

Which type(s) of euphorbia have you tried?  I ask as there are literally thousands of them!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Martinii and wulfenii. Here is a picture of very sad martinii.
  • I am following with interest, I just bought 3 of the martinii, all arrived looking the same, planted them out in a group of 3 fairly close together. One looks fabulous, has flowered already, one looks ok, the other looks decidedly sorry for itself. Bizarre.  :/
