Limited experience myself with perennial seeds, eryngium has proved near impossible for me and my plants haven't self seeded either. Father in law is a very experienced gardener and still struggles with them despite being able to get really exotic plants going from cuttings, divisions etc. Again my success has been based on sowing in September them leaving trays outside all winter, seems you just can't replicate mother nature
I attempted to grow astrantia in spring from seed "harvested" from a friend but it didn't seem to have germinated in months before a big fat pigeon knocked the seed tray over onto the paving. My OH swept up the resulting mess and threw it onto the nearest flower bed and I now have several healthy plants albeit in places that I had not intended. Because the seeds didn't come with instructions I hadn't realised that they needed to be autumn sown or chilled for germination.
Some of the ones I put in a 'cold frame' (aka plastic-sheet covered shelving) are germinating now : ) Clearly time runs differently when you are watching it/sown seed pots... I don't know what they are, though, as I had taken all the labels out, having been on the verge of chucking the whole lot away, but then having an impulsive change of heart. If they thrive, I may be doing a plant ID post or two at some point in the future... I am now tempted to put the nigellas and cornflowers (I know, I should have direct sown, but it was an experiment) outside too.
I had a friend whose hanging baskets were always fantastic. Turned out she just used to empty a packet of seeds into each one, and they always came up beautifully. It’s never worked for me.
