Tree root in lawn

I'm seeding a lawn from scratch. Currently preparing the ground before I add topsoil. As I was raking, I found a fairly long root in the lawn that comes from a maple tree. I want to cut it out but not sure if it will kill the tree. Any advice appreciated.

No it won't kill the tree. Cut it out.

Thanks. A bit of a dilemma as I've had conflicting advice. A family member who's excellent in the garden with a wealth of experience says cut it out. But my tree surgeon (very young) says leave it. Do you think there will be any long term affect cutting it out?

This is only a small root I would cut it out.
