What to do in Front of Fence?

I'm having a new fence fitted and need some help with what to do in front of it as I don't wish to regrow the grass up to it.

I was thinking of putting in a 30cm gravel type border in front and then adding something like ferns or a few shrubs, all advise welcome.

The soil is sandy but because of years of neglect before we moved in, it's become really compacted so think I would have to do some digging down to loosen it up.

The garden is south facing so this fence is on the north side, generating a shadow so anything would need to be shade tolerant.

This is just half of it, the whole fence line totals 14m but the new border will be approx 6m as I already have a veggie area to the right and my seated area and rose bed with box edging to the left.

  • How about a little woodland area? Cyclamen, hellebore, primroses and a couple of acers. They would be good with your shrubs and ferns.
