New Greenhouse advice on base please.

Hi folks.

We are looking to buy a greenhouse. I think we're going to take the plunge and get a Rhino bundle as they seem to be very good based on forum discussions and we have two 'lively' collies running about, so the toughened glass appeals.  As the one we are looking at has an integral base, it says it can be built straight on the soil if it's firm enough.  Has anyone done this or would you advise a concrete base?  I was considering laying some patio slabs for a base as we are not planning to grow directly in the soil. We'll use pots, grow bags, etc.

Any advice welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I would not erect anything directly onto soil. I would always lay a hard foundation of some description, probably a concrete strip, to provide a firm level base to build from

If it has an integral base and the manufacturer states it can go straight on the soil I see no reason why you cant do that if you want to.

One of my greenhouses is directly onto soil, or at least hardcore compacted on top of the clay, the main problem I get is condensation and damp because the soil is forever wicking water under the base and it evaporates inside. Given the choice I'd replace it with a damp proof membrane and concrete if I could.
Even more annoying is you can't seem to stream Cannonball Run anywhere. Prime has Cannonball Run II but not the original for some reason.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Thank you all for the responses. I think we'll go with a slab base to help with drainage and keep the damp out. We're also now looking at the 6x10ft one as everyone says we'll wish we went bigger LOL

You are right about Cannonball Run. The first one is much better than the second!
