Is this Hellebore ok?

Hello,

last November I bought and planted a Hellebore 'Angel Glow', it has been pretty much ok during the whole winter, with very nice flowers. Recently it has started to look a bit bad.. flowers are gone which I suppose it's ok for this plant, but also some leaves don't look good at all. Some leaves do look good.

Is this a normal looking plant for this time of the year, or should I do something about it?

Thank you

It’s hard to tell from the photos, but it looks fine to me. Just remove the old leaves that are drying and new ones will start growing soon enough.

I have the same hellebore and I remove all the leaves in late autumn to better appreciate the flowers. The weather has been rather dry where I am so I’m giving it a drink now and then.

Yes, that's normal. As pitter-patter says, old leaves can be removed before the flowers come through and if they are left, look pretty ropey by now. Leave the fresh new leaves and if you don't want seedlings, remove the flowers when they've gone over.

  • Cut off the old (browning and tatty) leaves and give your plant a good feed and a mulch around (not touching) the stems. It is absolutely fine. You can take the leaves off earlier, before flowering, so they don't spoil the show, but it's not essential and with some of the newer hybrids it doesn't seem as well tolerated as with H. orientalis.

Some hellebores can get a bit hammered by frost and snow.

One of mine got ahead of itself and frost got to the bud before it opened. The foliage is fine, not sure whether it's going to have another crack at flowering or not.
