Hibiscus splitting bark

Hi everyone, any idea what this is...I have a number of hibiscus but this one hasn't faired well over the winter and I'm not sure if its dead? The bark has split from the root upwards but isn't all over although it doesn't look good at all.  The splitting looks kind of like lacework if that helps. Sorry - images seem to have uploaded the wrong way around. 
Also any tips on broad bean rust treatments?

    Doesn't look great, does it.  I would suspect Phytophthora, a fungal disease.  Have a look here for common hibiscus diseases:
    As far as I know, Broad bean rust is (like most plant rusts) untreatable.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
