Thin photonia red robin

I have a mature photonia Red Robin hedge against the front of my house. It’s growing well and there are a lot of new red leaves at this time of year. Only problem is that the new growth is all at the top of the hedge and the lower half of the hedge is very sparse. I need to keep the hedge trimmed down so that it doesn’t cover the windows, but my pruning doesn’t seem to encourage new growth down below!  I thought it might be something to do with nutrients. Should I feed more often??
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks

You mention mature, so sounds like it had not been pruned when it was younger. Photinia shrubs can get quite big so if you want to keep it at around 1 to 1.5 metres, you should be pruning them yearly from young so the base branches early. You are unlikely to make the base fill out unless you start pruning some of the branches down to at least 1-2 feet.
  • thank you Borderline. I might try cutting down alternate stems to see if I can promote that lower growth.
