[...]Most firm's packing departments are filled by folk well down the payscale if not the evolutionary one - if you tried to tell them anything about "weed" - you'd be smelling smoke shortly after or they'd peke out and throw the lot in the bin. [...] Most firms have the more intelligent bring stuff in to a collecting area like a sorting office but rarely have the time to do much actual sorting. [...]
I'm sure this was not your intention, but I find your description of those workers rather insulting. The nursery where I get the bulk of my plants is a Centre d'Aide par le Travail (Sheltered work centre) which employs workers with physical or mental disabilities. I've always found those people extremely friendly with the customers and willing to help and I sincerely admire the dedication of their supervisors. And yes, I did get the infamous liverwort in some plugs once or twice, but that's a small price to pay for the good work that is carried there.
Of course, the situation is quite different with big firms who exploit their workers. I won't name names, we all know who they are.
I am glad you commented on that @Papi Jo, I felt the same but didn't quite know how to word it without causing offence.
I would think that given the current situation there are a lot of people working under immense pressure in a difficult working environment, all just trying to earn a living. Like you I believe the fault probabaly lies with those higher up the payscale, demanding too much in too little time.
We have a C.A.T. near here where in the past I have bought great plants from great people, but sadly this year they are not open as of yet.

Besides which, people in the ‘packing department’ don’t grow the plants. Weeds do not magically appear on the packing bench. Unnecessarily inflammatory and provocative as well as being inaccurate to blame the (probably) poorly paid people at the end of the chain who have no control over the quality of the plants they are being asked to pack - that’s a management/cultivation issue 🙄
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
So at least two people who've taken the trouble to post don't mind receiving inferior quality and service from firms with an obvious lack of Q&A? When I'm paying good money I expect better and would feel defrauded rather than insulted.
I think that anyone reading my original post could tell that it was intended to ridicule those firms needing it and definitely not aimed at anyone truly mentally impaired - I have a unit near and their stuff is excellent because there is a well operated quality control.
