sambucus

Hi,
Can I move a buddlia now and put a Sambucus in its place?
A few years ago I bought a Sambucus black lace plant and planting it in a shady place in my back garden but it only lasted two years when, for some reason, in the height of the summer the leaves dropped and it died. Although this time I have made the soil more firtile  I  am now consdiering planting it in my froint garden where it can get more sun although windy in the winter.  However, to do this I would have to move a buddlia.

hi and welcome to the forum.
I think you've left it a bit late for this season. My guess is that both are now coming into leaf, so not ideal to move either.

  • Thanks so much for replying,
I did think it would be too late to move the budlia but I only received the Black Lace a few days ago, so it is still in the pot that it arrived in.  Although it seems to be a hardy plant I thought I would plant it on Monday when hopefully it will not have so many frosty nights. There is an alternative of planting it in a large pot and wait until next year when I can move the budlia.

How old is the buddleia? Personally I would just go for it, cutting it back to the very lowest buds to make it as small as possible and taking as large a root ball as you can. I will say that I have sambuccus nigras growing in full shade and they do fine. You may have just been unlucky last time.

I would recommend doing as Robert suggests. Buddleia are as tough as old boots and should recover well. Water it very well before moving it and again afterwards and it should be fine.

  • All done, thanks so much for answering my query. My brother was over today and he also mentioned about cutting it down first.
Tomorrow I will plant out the Sabucus in its place and a few other flowers I have bought.

The Sumbucus that I had in thbe back garden was doing fine until one morning when I noticed the leaves had a mass of grey dust over them which must have killed it as the leaves all dropped. I put it down to living about a quarter of a mile from a chicken farm as some leaves from my rhodedendron also got the dust over the winter but only a few leaves so the plant was not affected.
