Can you offer any advice please

I found these creatures in my garden.  They ate a few of my plants last summer and they are back again.  Would you know the name of them?   How can I stop them destroying my plants?
Thank you

I think they're a type of moth caterpillar, can't think of the name at the moment though.

Yes, caterpillars ...they'll turn into one of the fascinating butterflies or moths that pollinate our fruit,  vegetables and flowers ... they have to eat in order to do that ... just part of the cycle of nature that lives in your garden  :)

Possibly the small quaker moth, orthosia cruda. If so, it is being fitted up because it is unlikely to be eating herbaceous garden plants. It feeds on tree leaves such as birch, oak, alder and various fruit trees.

Eric Carle didn't know the difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon though  ;) My kid loves those animations though despite me pointing out inaccuracies.
Hard to say on the caterpillar, it's possibly one of the underwing moths and should be getting ready to pupate soon so won't do much damage this year. You might have more varieties of caterpillar than you think in the garden though so it might not be this species that did the damage. Apart from a very few species that can be pests, most are happy enough munching on weeds.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
