I have to admit mine is in sun and wind, does dry it really quickly, they were re potted last year
  • I have a south facing garden so it will be in the sun. Although I will put it by the fence so some shade will cover it. It has been unusually windy here recently so maybe that’s not helped. Bottom looks ok but a root has came out of the side . I’m awaiting a large pot to be delivered and I will re pot it with mix of John Innes no 3 and manure. And just hope for the best I suppose

Our black bamboo (not from B&Q) was very slow to show any growth. Spoke to the grower (long before covid) and they said give it a chance as it is in a new area.
We did though plant it into the ground.
    Can yours be planted out?
Ours is now thriving and looks brilliant but it did take some years before it prepared to play ball.

The way mine grow is they sit there doing nothing and then suddenly throw up new stems which rapidly shoot up. I cut out some old stems at the same time the new ones appear

  • I have a black bamboo in a pot, has been for several years, it withstood everything the winter threw at it and then suddenly in the last few weeks has shrivelled leaves, looking exactly like yours. I have put it down to cold wind effect on tender leaves.
I would take yours out of its pot without disturbing the roots and put it in a bucket of water overnight. Let it drain and put back in its pot until the new pot arrives. No fertilizer, let it come back into growth before feeding. Bamboos will drop leaves quite naturally so yours will probably drop all of the dried out leaves as it develops new growth, they are slow developers so be patient.
  • Hi, thanks for replies.
The new pot came today, so I took it out of its old one. Definitely cramped in there so perhaps that was more the issue. Soaked the root ball approx 20mins. Although this wasn’t dry so good to know watering had worked it’s way down.
I have now placed it in its new pot mix of John Innes and manure.
I put slate chippings in the bottom for drainage . Just given it a good water, although now the water is sitting in the top. I’m guessing it’s because newly potted compost etc?

Must admit I've never bothered to put drainage material in mine - just planted in very large heavy duty plastic "bins" with holes drilled in the base. They always sit on soil tho.

The new compost will take a little time to settle around the plant and soak up water.  Little and often in the dry weather I would suggest :)
  • Hi everyone, just thought I’d give an update. Bamboo leaves have all completely relaxed and uncurled now, but unfortunately are now going brown. Who knew bamboo would give me nightmare! But this one is! Is it dead, should I leave it alone or remove the slate in the bottom of the pot. Getting contradictory advice on have some manure in there aswel. Thanks in advance
