  • Thanks so much for your suggestions. I definitely have a better idea of what to get now.

I did measure the width of the beds - and they are 300mm wide. Unfortunately, half the depth is hardcore (they said it would make for better drainage) so the roots wont be able to get to the ground. So actually, its fairly shallow.  :( What depth do you think Fargesia rufa needs?
  • Heucheras, heucheras and heucheras 😆 You won't get much in the way of height from them but they're very colourful and only need tidying up in spring plus, bees love them. Ferns are pretty good too and, not including tree ferns, can get pretty big.

Ferns, Hellebores, Skimmia, Virbunum davidii, Dicentra, Heuchera, Ivy, Digitalis, Bergenia, Bergensia, Astilbe, Primroses, Epimedium, some Euphorbia, shade tolerant clematis, Actaea, Anemone japonica, Arum lilies, Hostas, Brunnera macrophylla, snowdrops, Fuchsia, some Geraniums (well, that's what I have in my shady borders and doing well)

I wish I could grow Heucheras. No matter what I do, whether in pots or the ground the Vine Weevil grubs eat 'em to a stump.
