Plants in pots need an annual spring top up with slow release fertiliser because they will have used all the nutrients in the compost in the first growing season.  An occasional liquid tonic with dilutes seaweed, rose or tomato fertiliser is also a good idea beween spring and mid summer.  No later as the new growth needs time to harden off before the frosts.

There are specific feeds now available for all sorts of plants - camellias, rhodos, roses, clematis, citrus (seasonal changes to their feeding), tomatoes, leafy plants, flowering plants, ericaceous plants.   Seaweed is a good all rounder and has trace elements you don't get with classic inorganic fertilisers.
