London Clay Soil - Topsoil

Hi,

I live in surrey and we have a clay-type soil but it's not terrible.

I'm about to rotovate but I'm not clear on whether (given the soil type) on what top soil i need to buy as all advice seems to suggest sand is a bad idea for clay (i.e sandy loams).

Can someone advise?

is it going to be a lawn or border , or something else afterwards?

  • Lawn for Now - trying to just get it back to scratch - it's a muddy mess after digging out all the weeds.

If it's going to be lawn"for now" and the soil is "not terrible " I'd not add anything to it. Wait until you're creating borders then add some "good stuff" to that.

Compost/soil improver is what you need. Humus is the answer to loosening it up. Sand will give you a large brick. I have clay soil too and I'm still working on it adding compost all the time.

I agree with Hosta if there are no real problems with your soil
Some RHS info here may give some ideas about dealing with clay.

  • if it helps, this is what I'm working with. It was a weed ridden mess. It's now a bit of dirt with lots of roots in it
