Topsoil over grass

Can I put topsoil straight on top of a grassed area to level it up? Would need to increase height by around 100mm

I'd say 100mm of soil on top would kill the grass underneath

  • I was planning on turfing the whole area afterwards. Do I need to remove old lawn first or can I just topsoil over then lay turf

it's not ideal to lay a new lawn on top. You'd end up with 100mm of soil then a solid "pan" of soil underneath.
Best to remove the old lawn, rotovate / dig and start again from scratch.
