It's fine , but expensive if you need to work it over a bit area. I have local tree surgeons dump my lorry loads of woodchippings which rots down pretty quickly , or you could use it as a mulch.
I have heavy clay soil. I regularly turn it over and trake to break it down. I mulch with home made compost and I also throw used compost from pots onto it as well. It has been a long while but slowly it is improving. I have also had a go at making leaf mould last year and it is still doing its thing in a black bin liner.
I'd just mulch heavily with cheap compost each spring (and autumn if you can). Put a 2 to 3 inch layer all over and let the worms dig it in. In the meantime choose plants that can use heavy soil (there are plenty) and dig in a fair bit to each planting hole.
I would certainly recommend the composted bark from CPA Horticultural but the price Pete.8 stated was for 40 bags, I bought 20 and it was £8.25 a bag so I think your price isn't bad .It seems to be in Ireland so CPA wouldnt be delivering anyway.
