Droopy rose leaves

edited April 2021 in Problem solving
Hi all, I’ve just moved and my new garden has a mature rose (not sure what variety yet as it hasn’t flowered). It is growing up a fence with a climbing hydrangea. It looked healthy until about 4 days ago when the leaves started to droop. I have watered it and fed it rose feed and sprayed it with rose clear. I would be grateful for any expertise as to whether the issue is 1) overwatering 2) underwatering 3) frost damage 4) aphids or other infestation (I’m hoping the rose clear will sort that) 5) wind damage - the stalk isn’t staked and has been rocking in the wind - I wonder if that has caused damage? or 6) the hydrangea blocking it’s sun? Any ID for the variety of the rose would be a bonus! Thank you very much

Any I.D wouldn't be a bonus it would be a miracle, where abouts are you in the world, seems unusual to have that many leaves now,
  • Hi Nanny Beach, thanks for the quick reply - I’m in South London. If it is unusual for the rose to have so many leaves this early in the year, perhaps it is frost damage?

I think you’ve got it in one ... frost damage on lush new leaves.

No need for Roseclear .., it’ll kill the good insects as well as the bad. Don’t waste your money. (Save it to buy more plants 😉) I’ve not sprayed my roses with anything other than a jet of water for years.

I’ve had exactly the same, lots of lush growth (even the odd early bloom) after lovely March weather then cold winds and freezing temperatures! It will drop those leaves in time and grow new ones, so nothing to worry about. Apart from the weather 🥶

  • Thanks Dovefromabove and Nollie - that makes sense and good to hear it will grow new ones. I will also try the water spray next time I spot any aphids! Fingers crossed for some lovely blooms this summer 🤞🏻
