Conifer Gaps

Hello,
We removed some dead conifer bushes and have now been left with some unsightly gaps between the healthy bushes. Does anyone have any suggestions about what we could do with these gaps? We can't really plant anything due to lack of sunlight and also the roots of the existing conifers. And we're worried trellis will be too high as there's nothing to attach it to at the top. Any suggestions at all??
