Can wood chip be put directly on top of old paving stones?

    Yes I was in two minds about pushing the paving slabs down! If we remove the slabs do we need to put down landscaping fabric or is it unnecessary as the paving has already suppressed the weeds?
    Lots of good ideas to consider, thank you.

    You could take up alternate slabs so they look more like  stepping stones and then infill with bark.

  • I’d avoid landscaping fabric which is very bad for the environment in general and your plants. With the wood chip, it’s heartening to hear that others have had good experiences of this working. I think indeed that the secret may lie both in packing it really deeply and in retaining it somehow. The risk is that as the chips rot down, worms will come to the top to consume them and birds will then scatter the chips, exposing the paving slabs again. Topping up annually will help.
