Ferns in hanging baskets?

Hello,
I’d like to hang some baskets this year. I’d like something evergreen to give year round interest to the garden which is very concrete.

Would an evergreen fern work? Or would they be high-maintenance? I have a part-shaded wall I could hang these on. If it’s a good idea, can anyone recommend a fern that would suit a hanging basket?

Thank you

I'm sure you can do it, the more shady the better as it will make watering a bit less critical. You could have a go at a Kokedama: How To Make a Kokedama - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

Polypodium vulgare would probably make a good subject, it's pretty tough and can actually grow epiphytically on the bark of trees. You could partner it with one of those small narrow leaved ivies.

  • Thank you - I’ve noted down Polypodium vulgare and will keep an eye out for it.

I’d never heard of Kokedamas before - not sure if I’m sold though!
