Old rhododendron buds turning brown

Hi all,
I have an old rhododendron, planted by the previous owners about 20 years ago. It is planted in an awkward spot on a slope in a rockery. It looks a bit straggly but three years ago it had the most glorious display of flowers in May. Sadly last year it got caught by a May frost despite me attempting to cover it. This year it has lots of buds but some are already turning brown :(
I keep it watered at dry times of the year and use a feed supplement for acid plants. I have a large roll of garden fleece in case of late frosts. Any more ideas to prevent the buds turning brown. I love on the edge of exmoor at a height of around 500 feet. The garden is pretty sheltered but we have had some vicious cold winds recently. Many thanks.

You seem to have done the right things, did the buds come out green then turn brown,I have never put fleece over any of mine

I think it is just frost damage. If it was bud blast you would see spiky fungal growths on blackened buds.

Are those buds turning brown all sticky? What is the proportion of brown buds to green ones?It happened to a rhodo of mine and the only solution was to uproot it, I'm afraid. :(
