I love this, but what is it?

    It might be a camellia, huge, and very beautiful.

    I agree ... a camellia ... but no idea which one ... some are tree-like and some are more like shrubs. Lots of varieties out there. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    Oh wow - thanks both for such a fast response! I will go and learn about camellias in the hope I can eventually have one like this  :)

    If I remember correctly there was a feature on camellias on Friday's Gardener's World. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
