How can I save new hydrangea

I planted over a week ago and all was fine, but I added some Growmore the other day and I think I added too much. Does it look like over fertilisation? I don't think it needs more water as soil feels damp. Plant is in a shady spot, was originally blue.

Growmore is mostly nitrogen and inorganic so not a good choice for flowering plants or soil organisms.  You would be better using blood, fish and bone or a specialist fertiliser for flowering plants.  It will say on the packaging.

For now, watering will dilute the growmore and it's hard to over water a hydrangea in the ground.

  • Okay, thanks very much.

Original photo I took yesterday and watered again then at the time. Just checked again there and the leaves have wilted. Will it revive?

You'll just have to wait and see I'm afraid.

Don't water anymore now and, in future, read the instructions about dosages for fertilisers, weed killers, lawn treatments.   Get it wrong and it will either be ineffective or poisonous depending on whether you under or overdose.

I suspect it may have been kept in quite a protected spot before you planted it ... now it’s outside I think it’s been hit by the colder weather. That may be the problem rather than the fertiliser.

That is definitely a possibility so try giving it some protection over these next few frosty nights that are forecast.   Anything such as a cardboard box or upturned bucket that doesn't touch the foliage will do.  Put it over before sunset and lift it off again after the morning frosts have thawed.

I agree with @Dovefromabove, I think it's been hit by a chilly night
