Camelia with two colours

I planted a white camelia about three years ago. It has grown well and has lots of white buds but one has opened as a beautiful pink flower. Is this common?

I have heard of it, but never personally seen it. I think it's called a "sport", where a flower reverts to one of its parent colour. I might be getting this confused with roses,  but l'm pretty sure it happens to camellias as well.
  • Yes. It is quite common in camellias. Sometimes they throw a sport individual flower or a small branch carrying a different coloured flower. They also sometimes throw flowers of the main plant colour splashed with another colour. These can be propagated by growing on the affected branch to produce a new variety.
  • Thank you. That is very helpful
