Emerging Canna Lilies (Cold Snap Forecast Next Week)

Hi All,

Last year was my first year of having a garden in several years. In my excitement I purchased and planted two cannas very late summer, September 2020. Following the first cold snap in December, I hastily covered the borders with a thick layer of bark. Following research later, with hindsight I probably should have dug up my very new canna plants and stored somewhere cool and dark for the winter. Alas, they stayed in the ground.

Now the plants have survived and the warm weather we’ve had in the UK recently has spurred growth. With a cold snap forecast next week for a couple of days, what would you suggest my next steps are? Should I allow the cold to do its thing and hope for new growth when the weather warms up again? Should I cover with straw, or pots, and hope for the best? I’ve also read whilst many gardeners dig up and divide their cannas in autumn, some advocate spring also being a great time to divide, should I do this or is the plant too young for this?

Any advice welcome. If it’s useful we live in Brighton on the south coast, weather next week forecast to get to about -1 with a ‘feels like’ -6c. Garden is relatively exposed but the cannas are protected to the west by a brick wall.

I can,t see any Cannas there.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • Oh no really?! Oops lol. I found a label for canna tropical gold next to them and put 2 and 2 and made 5 😅
  • What would advice be for protecting crocosmia please.

What would advice be for protecting crocosmia please.
none required: tough as old boots.
The canna might still be snoozing underground.

Thank you Hostafan1 🙂 I shall practice the art of patience, leave alone, and see what occurs as the weeks go by.

Patience is a tricky one to master for us gardeners.

Agree with everyone, these are crocosmia, not cannas. No need for you to do anything at this stage.
if you have the space, it’s indeed a good idea to dig up the cannas at first sign of frost in autumn and overwinter them.
I started mine out of dormancy 2-3 weeks ago, dividing them while I was at it and was rewarded with tons of pups.

Thanks SophieK, great advice. So exciting to see all your pups (and reassuring to know I’m not the only one using every square inch of surface area to keep my plants warm and cosy until the weather improves) 😀 thanks again

I take it you’re not planning on having a shower any time soon @brightonrocks ? 🤣
