Hebe

Hello
I’ve just joined this forum and hoping to solve the problem of my mums Hebe .
There are two in her garden one has been there for several years one only about 18 months . I’ve just visited her and both are dead , whole plant completely dry and brown . About 18 months ago I covered the ground on her beds and put down bark , could this have kept the ground too wet . It’s such a shame they were lovely variegated variety with mauve flowers . Thanks I’m advance .

Mine seemed to have taken the horrendous wet winter of last year and not suffered. I'd have a guess that it could be a form of root pest that decimated them both. Have you dug them up and looked if there were some grubs munching at the roots?

I think probably the harder-than-recent-average winter. Some hebes aren't fully hardy. I've tried the the commonly-sold Hebe Andersonii variegata a couple of times and it's never come through a winter outside here.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Yes, I'd go with the cold snap too. Although it was stated to go down to -4 only, water in my garden froze solid several inches thick. It's just bad luck--nothing to do with mulching I think.
