Laylandii Tree Parasite?

I have just found a round shiny shaped ball like parasite (looks like size and shape of half a ping pong ball) attached to the trunk of my laylandii tree.  Should I be concerned?  Does anyone know what this is?
Thanks
Helen

It may be a slime mould called Fuligo septica (aka dog vomit fungus.)  IF it is that, it's harmless to the tree and if you break it open, it will look purple/brown inside.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you so much I will check this out that's great! :)
  • Followed your link thank you, and found the same image as mine while searching through and found out it is called Slime Mould (Reticularia Lycoperdon).  So thank you so much for your help without your link I wouldn't have known.

If it has changed in appearance overnight, it's likely slime mould.  If it looks the same, it might just be the beginnings of a bracket fungus, which wouldn't be good.  The latter will smell 'mushroomy' if you break a bit off and crush it.
