Disease identification

Hello friends,
can anyone tell me what is happening to my ceanothus?  I can’t determine if this is disease or some pest.  The area where this is planted has been overrun with vole tunneling.  This particular one was struggling so I cut it bag and dug it out.  There are two others in the same location with the same wounds.

Hi @juniperms 😊 welcome to the forum 😊

Not sure what’s caused that damage ... looks a bit like historic sawfly damage but I’ve not known them to cause a problem on ceanothus ... perhaps others know?

However, that does look very mature for a ceanothus ... they’re not known for longevity. I suspect it’s past it’s best and is ripe for replacement.

Hope that’s of some help 😊

  • Hi @Dovefromabove,

thank you!  This is helpful.  These shrubs are indeed, quite old.  It was during the process of cutting them back and digging them up (for replacement) that I discovered these wounds.
I was replacing them because they were slowly dying back and half the shrub was looking quite sad.  Then figured these wounds were the cause 🤷‍♀️
    Time to research sawfly!
    cheers!
