I moved to my new property Nov 2020 and the privet hedge along the front was very healthy with no brown in it whatsoever.  It was in need of a trim as it had not been cut for a few years.
The hedge was trimmed and all was fine. For about 6 weeks now i have noticed a lot of the hedge has started to turn brown. The hedge has been here for many years and all i can think of and i hope its not is Honey Fungus ? any help would be welcome.

Hi @fizzers100  and welcome to the forum 😊

Is it the areas that are most exposed to the cold wind and weather?  It looks as if that might be the case.
I think what may have happened is that it was clipped back over the winter and put on some new leaves in the very early spring ... but we had another spell of cold frosty and windy weather before the new young leaves had time to mature and toughen up and they were damaged. If I’m right they’ll fall and be replaced by new young leaves which (hopefully) won’t have to cope with bad weather before they’ve developed a tough outer surface (called a cuticle), and you’d hedge should look just fine in a few months’ time.

It’s good to remember not to trim evergreen hedges in the winter 😊

  • The hedge was lightly trimmed by a professional gardener - it was end of November.
It is exposed here and always seems windy but the hedge has been here a very long time and has survived. The hedge was not trimmed in some parts and even the untouched hedge is going brown so i dont think the trim it had did any harm.I will just have to see how it goes and hope it does come back.
