I appreciate everyone's comments and it's true they aren't actually bad
I bought them off someone else and plan to keep out in summer and then take in during winter
But it can rain in summer so I'd want to put something on to protect the wood at least rather than enhance it
What would be ideal for that?

Don't use oils if they have already been varnished, though. If there is no varnish, teak oil or similar is just fine for protecting the wood.

Is there a something on the surface like a hard, shiny patina - like nail clean nail polish, or it just bare wood?

I've zoomed and enhanced the photo best I can and would say that they were originally treated with a wood-coloured varnish of some kind, as it looks like the bolts and screws were coated too:

If you could provide another photo of that area, we could confirm.  If it has indeed been treated, you'll need to sand that all off before doing anything else.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Yes, I think doing nothing is probably the best option.

Shall I put something clear just for protection and give it a fresher look?
    What would be best
It wouldn't worth sanding it all back as it is good enough tbh as others have also suggested

Don't mess. It's fine. Very classy. Sit on it and enjoy your good fortune😊
    In London. Keen but lazy.
