Bay tree brown

Hey there I have this little bay tree I purchased last summer I planted it in a pot thinking It would be OK a few weeks ago I noticed it going brown. I was I bit annoyed as they aren't cheap. I think it's must be due to the winter weather cold winds snow too much or not enough water. I have now planted so it gets the water it needs. My question is I want it to come back. Will it come back. Do I need to take the dead leaves off or leave them on HELP I don't want to spend another £140

Friend of mine had a bay tree in a pot that did the same thing last winter. Be prepared for it to look even worse over the coming weeks - hers looked proper dead at one point.

But the good news is about 90% of hers made a full recovery by the end of the summer. In her case it was a lack of water and drying winds. Once it was kept watered it soon started to recover. They are really tough plants.

I wouldn't do any pruning at all btw. Leave it a full year and then see what is actually dead. Might be that every branch recovers in time.

My Bay trees go brown if I give them too much water,

I doubt it would be lack of water. In pots and containers, many shrubs tend to be under stress, and usually underwatered. Evergreens are more vulnerable. If stood over a doorway with a big rain shadow, they are even more vulnerable. Couple that with cold winds, the leaves will be the first signs and they tend to dry up.

I agree to leave it alone but keep on top of watering, they may recover, but sometimes it can take a while for recovery to show.
