Establishing new lawn

We've not long moved in and the garden is sort of divided, the front 3/4 is mostly weeds, bare patches and the odd tufts of grass until the back quarter which is a mixture of grass and weeds.
Basically, we want to establish a lawn and I'm digging up the weeds but it's not exactly a quick job. I'm not sure whether to divide the garden up and clear say the first half of the lawn of weeds and then seed it and try to get the lawn going before moving on to the back half - otherwise I'll be leaving the majority of the garden bare until I'm done. But then I'm also not sure if that's a terrible idea and a waste of time if all the weeds in the back half would likely just seed and spread back into the front half.
Any ideas/advice would be great, thanks!

How big is the total area? Is it a 'blank canvas' i.e. are there plants and shrubs nearby or is it empty?
  • Rough estimate, 10m wide and 20m long?  There are mature trees along back and one side and some shrubs down the other side. There are also quite a lot of what looks like large forget me not plants mostly on the side or interspersed in amongst the back part of the lawn. Otherwise blank canvas (well, once the weeds are up it will be)
