Canker on cherry tree

We removed a tree last year as it had canker. It sat in a small bed on Its own and has been covered with stones since. Can anyone recommend a tree that might be Ok? We will be removing the soil and replacing it... we had thought of a Crab Apple tree? They seem pretty hardy...

Cankers enter through damage to the bark, so the soil should not be the issue, although replacing it will only help.  Apples are a different species anyway, so unlikely to be infected by a prunus disease.  How big do you want the tree to grow?

  • Not very big, say 3-4 metres, it's a terraced house with a South facing garden. No lawn, tubs and pots and 2 smallish beds. The site is at the end of the garden. Thank you for your reply!

Have a look through this site, which has some excellent content.  Other suppliers are available. ;)

  • Thank you so much! Appreciate your help.
  • Check out things like rowans and magnolias... Something like Magnolia x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’ might work if the spread isn’t too great.
  • Thank you. We'd love a magnolia! Good idea!
