Can anyone advise me how to treat our holly tree. About five years ago, after a very cold wet winter, it began to shed leaves and the branches turned yellow. Although some new leaves grow every year they quickly drop off with the first wind. We now have very few leaves and lots of yellow branches. Any ideas would be welcome, we don’t want to lose it.
It could be poor drainage or even lack of water/inconsistent water. Shedding leaves in spring is normal for some evergreen shrubs, but if your shrub is not leafing up and always sparse throughout the year, I think more likely a water issue. Holly shrubs are fine in moist soil but not waterlogged soil with drainage issues. A prune to open up the shrub may also help to rejuvenate it.
