Ideas for large containers in north facing spot?

There's a small space in front of my house and I'd like to put a couple of large containers there - anyone have any good ideas for what to put in them? My preference is for something informal, preferably colourful. It's a north facing spot.

Thanks!

Camellias might work if you don't mind a fairly short spring display. Or Hydrangea paniculata e.g. 'Vanille Fraise' or 'Wim's Red' for later in the year, over a far longer period. I'd go for the Hydrangea with spring bulbs.

(By large containers I'm assuming larger than 45x45x45cm)
