Magnolia x soulangeana

Two years we bought a young Magnolia x soulangeana. She was potted up last year into a larger pot using ericaceous soil, and will get a re-fresh using this same mix this week (will take out the top third and replace). She also gets a couple of slow release rose plant feeds a year too, and is regularly watered during the summer.

She looks perfectly healthy (image below is from late last summer - she's the green shrub in the terracotta planter by the fence, left), and her leaves are starting to come out now (thanks sunshine!).

Just wondering when this Magnolia might come into bloom? And whether she needs any extra care to encourage her to flower?

Magnolias carry the flower buds over the winter, so if you don't see any large obvious buds in late winter, it won't flower this year.  Most magnolias flower before the leaves appear.  Most of my magnolias are now in the ground apart from a stellata, and I don't use just ericaceous compost for those in pots as I don't believe it is necessary, but do mix about 10% in to ensure it stays neutral or slightly acid, which is all they need.
To maximize the chances of blooms next spring, make sure it is fed and kept well watered, especially in late summer and autumn, when the flower buds start forming.  Any period of drought it experiences at that stage will severely limit its ability to flower the following year.

  • Thanks @BobTheGardener! I wasn't expecting it to flower this year - I just got jealous of all the local Magnolia's in bloom and wondered whether mine was just too young.

I did mix the ericaceous with normal MPC actually - just remembered. So will do that again. I'd like to get it in the ground eventually, I've just been putting it off because our ground is heavy clay and we've been focusing our digging energy on creating new raised veg beds. Maybe next year!

It's very well watered anyway but will keep at it. It rose feed right? I think it was someone at the garden centre who recommended it. It's the Toprose rose and shrub feed and I do it twice a year.

The good news is I also have heavy clay and the magnolias love it, so don't worry about planting them out when the time comes. :)

I’ve got 4 in heavy clay... and they seem perfectly happy the largest is just coming into flower and plenty of buds in the others
