Climbers/fence covering

Hi, I will be taking out these laurel bushes as the root space has proven to be too small and they aren’t surviving. I want to hide the fence with evergreen of some kind - what would work best to cover the fence and cope with the relatively small planting space for the roots? Anything really - I just prefer looking at plants/bushes/flowers than a fence! Thank you everyone.

    I think the honest answer is nothing except a vigorous weed.
    You just might get an annual climber to grow, nasturiums are tough and easy to grow and can climb if you have something to attach them to.

    Is it open at the base of the planter? I assume they're planted in the ground as there's no 'back' to the planter.

    Thanks both, yes straight in the ground - its sleepers laid down along the fence line and soil behind them

    With luck, you might get away with ivy, but I think you'll need to dig over the soil below to break it up and add plenty of organic material.
