Aquilegia Identification Please

Can anyone tell me whether they have ever had an aquilegia turn from a normally shaped white flowered parent to a self set one with no 'skirt'?  Is this something unusual - certainly is to me.

Seedlings can vary greatly from the parent, although I find that many of the doubles come true. That version is termed a clematiflora, ie, it looks a lot like a clematis flower, rather than the usual grannys bonnet type.  It is certainly an early flowerer. Mine are just forming new leaves.
