Grass seed did not germinate

Hey all. Feeling a bit disappointed. We sowed the grass seed (Verve family and sports lawn seed) on 22nd March. We cultivated the soil first, levelled it, sowed the seed and then lightly raked it again. Since then we have watered it daily. But no germination yet. Are we doing something wrong?

Should we water it more or add some soil fertilizer? Should we try again?

It may be that it's been too chilly for the seeds to germinate. Hopefully someone can confirm and advise  :)

Too early.   You need temps of at least 8C for grass to grow and probably a bit more for germination.  April is the best time to sow, when the soil is warming up and is moist from showers.

Hey, thanks for replying. Does mid April sound okay?

Yes, but check temperatures and go by those rather than dates.  It may well be be too cold still or, if like last year's early heatwave, too hot.

You don't say where you live.  As a gardener married to a farmer, we've sown lots of grass seed....acers over the years and in southern England March is the ideal time to sow it.  It's slower to germinate in March but I've never known it not succeed. It's only 1 week from 22 March  Just wait; in a week or so especially if temperatures reach the predicted high this week, you are very likely to see a faint green carpet of new growth.  Patience.

It's only been a week! A warm wet spell and it'll be up.

It's also been fairly dry, it may be that watering once a day isn't quite enough. Also it's been scientifically proven that the more you look at grass seed, the slower it is to germinate. OK that last bit was a joke.

That goes for any seed @Loxley!  I have chillies with that problem.
