Potted Plant for an Odd Spot!

There is an odd gap down the side of our house with no gate at the end. It feels a bit drab and this side of the house is south facing. I am planning to put a cold frame down here to make use of the space but I would also like some greenery! I found a rather large barrel half and was thinking of putting it just before the chimney. Can someone advise a good size plant? I would like a bit of height but not too big! (Don't want a climber ideally) Thanks!

  • This is not a good place for any plant to grow. Whatever you put in a container here will strain to grow upwards for light, it would probably struggle for water unless you are prepared to water at least once if not twice a day. In the summer it is likely to be a searing desert when there is fine weather. The only type of plants likely to enjoy these conditions would be succulents/cacti. Plants will also grow forward from the wall which will impede the width of the path. A cold frame for overwintering plants would work but there is a strong chance they would end up spindly due to lack of light.
Perhaps someon else has more constructive ideas.

You might be better putting the container on the other side.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
