Humus rich soil definition?

What exactly does this mean - my understanding is one that has perhaps been enriched by leaf mould, but does it mean anything else?

I'm creating some new borders, and some of the plants I'm looking at say "humus rich soil" - what is the best way to enrich my soil in the absence of having stacks of leaf mould to dig in (new garden, only been here since December so it will be a long time before I'll have any leaf mould to use)? Is there anything else I can use instead?

For info, I currently have clay soil, am already planning on digging in manure, but thought this was more for texture/improvement rather than becoming humus-like.

Hummus rich just means loads decayed plant material. It can be compost, leaf mould, well rotted manure or all of the above. As long as it well broken down it's ok.

@Wilderbeast Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. :)
