Persicaria dividing

I have a persicaria that I need to lift and divide but the runners are around two inches thick and my shovel wont go through them. Any ideas as to how I can divide these safely?

I use an old bread knife or a pruning saw for thick rooted perennials.

  • Thanks K67; I watched that video before I came on here. His persicarias come up with little effort - I guess some have thinner runners than others.

Thanks Obelixx; I was wondering if I'd have to resort to sawing through them in some way. Just wondered if the pruning saw was too rough but I think I have little choice - will give it a go.
