Plant renovation

I have an old broom which has become very tall and leggy (approx 7') with foliage and flowers only at the top
Can it be shortened and renovated or will reducing the height destroy it?

I'm afraid this kind of shrub will do this and there is no remedy. Plus they are usually short-lived plants anyway. I suggest uprooting it and planting a new one (or something else) instead.

This is not a broom. It looks more like a pineapple bush ( just scent, no pineapples). Cut it back hard (about 50%) and see what happens. It's a nice looking plant - it would be a shame to kill it. It's a good time of year to do radical pruning, though it may not flower again tilll late. Good luck!

Mine is definitely a broom, gone very leggy.  Mixed feelings on hearing it can't be renovated, but as @Papi Jo said, opportunity for something new.....

"Pineapple bush"? What are they? Which botanical/scientific name do you mean?
Ah, got it. I suppose you mean Argyrocytisus battandieri.
Could the OP please post a close up of the flowers so we can ascertain what plant it is?
