Which variety of cucumber for outdoor growing?

EustaceEustace Posts: 2,290
I would like to grow some cucumbers this year. I do not have a greenhouse, so it has to be a variety which is suitable for outdoor growing. Please recommend an appropriate variety. Thanks.

    Look for Ridge Cucumbers.
Some other varieties can also be suitable for outside.  Depends on your location and aspect.

We grew marketmore last year, 4 plants growing up a frame made from old wire fencing. They are self fertile, but I must admit I can’t say why that is important. In the end they produced pretty well, although mildew was a problem for two plants. They had a great crunch and flavour, also good for pickle.
I started mine indoors last year, but I’m trying polytunnel this year, so far no sign of them....we live in hope!

@plot22 Thanks for your response. I sowed 4 Marketmore seeds last week, but none of them have yet germinated. If they don't by another week, I'll sow some more. I am planning to plant them in a container in a sunny location, also give adequate support/netting.

  • We grew Crystal Lemon with our children. They loved the spherical shape and the fact you could eat it like an apple. We did peel them as the skins were fairly hard but that was more to do with a period of erratic watering than the variety.
  • I grow The "Burpless" variety which has less acidity so do not repeat when eaten.I grow them outside and have had good results for the last 5 years. Very tasty
