salvia hotlips

I need to keep my salvia hotlips in a pot and would welcome advice on the type of compost that I should use. I re potted in multi purpose compost at the end of the summer and it is now looking very sad. Any advice would be welcome. thank you

It needs lots of grit and sand mixing in. Most MPC doesn't drain well enough.

I just use MPC for my potted shrubby salvias. They're fine in that as long as I don't overdo the watering. They all look sad and tatty at this time of the year, particularly after a colder than average winter.
Wait until you start to see new growth, then repot (it won't hurt to add grit or sharp sand if you have it but I don't think it's essential) and prune the tatty old growth off, down to where the new growth is coming, or further if you like.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
